President Trump recently sent a letter to Ayatollah Khamenei urging talks to resolve concerns over the Iranian nuclear program, and making threats of serious military action if Iran doesn’t play along. From the Ayatollah’s perspective the US under Trump is not a reliable negotiating partner. The Ayatollah cites Trump’s 2018 abrogation of the JCPOA nuclear agreement, but others could also point to his effective cancellation of a trade agreement that Trump’s government negotiated with Canada and Mexico during his first term in office, his undermining of decades old institutions like NATO and WHO.
